From High-Fashion to Heritage
I’m Paul, and my journey in knitwear began with a technical foundation, earning a City & Guilds qualification in the intricate mechanics of knitting machine programming and repair. This led to a nine-year tenure in Leicestershire—the heart of the UK’s textile industry—where I specialised in translating high-concept sketches and physical samples into technical realities. During this time, I produced garments for prestigious brands including Burberry, Henri Lloyd, Marc O’Polo, and Filippa K.
Following a rewarding chapter serving in the emergency services—a role defined by precision and community impact—I was drawn back to my original passion, and the opportunity to relocate to Guernsey and return to my roots in knitwear was irresistible. In this beautiful island I met my partner Kelly, and we live with my son and our two dogs in the Castel.
After a decade of crafting the iconic guernsey sweater for others, I have established ‘Guernsey guernseys Ltd.’ My mission is to combine my technical expertise with a deep respect for the history, utility and practicality of the garment. I believe in creating wardrobe staples that are as authentic as they are timeless, blending traditional craftsmanship with subtle, contemporary evolutions.
The Heritage of the Guernsey
The island’s knitting legacy predates the sweater we recognise today. Long before the "guernsey" became a global icon, the island was renowned for its hand-knitted, high-quality wool stockings. Later, the island began to produce "frocks" (the earliest form of the guernsey)—durable tops designed to protect seafarers from the harsh elements. Whilst many may know it as a jumper, a sweater or a pullover, a guernsey is locally known as just that – a guernsey!
Traditionally, the guernsey was hand-knitted "in the round," creating a seamless, reversible piece with no distinct front or back. While the industry eventually shifted toward automated machines that required knitted panels to be sewn together, much of the original soul was lost in the seams. Historical patterns were often unique to specific families or parishes—marks of kinship and identity—though since these patterns were rarely documented, much of that specific lore remains beautifully "woolly".
Today, modern technology has finally caught up with tradition. We can now produce seamless garments on sophisticated machinery, returning the guernsey to its most authentic, structural form for the first time in decades. Our 100% British pure new worsted wool is spun to our specific requirements to ensure our yarn honours the guernsey’s utilitarian background whilst still being comfortable for daily wear.
Our yarn is dyed and spun to our specifications, because every step and process in making our garment results in the best product we can offer. The spinning method aims for the perfect balance of comfort and durability. Our colours are found and inspired by the island. Whilst the design sees the original features return, our hope is that a hand knitter would struggle to differentiate our garments from a hand knitted guernsey.
Branding
Our branding labels are a mark of pride to our local workmanship, and we proudly include them to the vents or hems. The reverse of the labels displays a QR code, which when scanned takes you to the wash care page of our website so you can keep your guernsey at its best. However, for those who prefer a completely minimalist look, simply include a note with your order to receive your garment without external branding.
